Rudd's smoking laws an affront to freedom

Fri 30 Apr 2010

The Australian Liberal Students' Federation (ALSF) has today slammed Kevin Rudd's proposed restrictions on cigarette packaging and has called on Tony Abbott and the Coalition to oppose the bill.

"These laws are like something straight out of George Orwell's 1984," said ALSF President Alex Butterworth.

"The proposal is an affront to freedom, and all Australians should be appalled,"

"It is up to the Coalition to take a stand for freedom and oppose these laws, rather than falling into the politically convenient trap of supporting them,"

"More than anything, this proposal is a cover-up for the vast array of failings by Kevin Rudd, who has done nothing of substance in his time as Prime Minister,"

“It’s just another step along the road-map to the nanny state,” Mr Butterworth said.

The ALSF opposes all government restrictions that do not protect people or property from harm.
