STUDENT TAX STOPPED
Tue 18 Aug 2009
The Australian Liberal Students’ Federation (ALSF) today applauded the Senates decision to block the Rudd Labor Governments efforts to reintroduce Compulsory Student Unionism.
“This is a victory for all students across Australia,” said ALSF President, Alex Butterworth.
“The ALSF, in unison with students around Australia, campaigned to stop the student tax, and that is exactly what we have achieved.”
“The ALSF is very pleased that the Coalition and Senator Fielding have held the government to account.”
Mr Butterworth noted that climbing levels of student debt, rising youth unemployment and uncertain economic times meant that it was imperative that the ALSF stand up for the interests of students.
“If it were not for the efforts of the ALSF, then today’s result may have been disastrous for students.”
“Senator Fielding hit the nail on the head on Monday night when he labelled this tax for what it was, a tax on the poor.”
Mr Butterworth highlighted the importance of innovative online campaign techniques as crucial to the defeat of the Higher Education Legislation Amendment (Student Services and Amenities, and Other Measures) Bill 2009.
“The Stop Student Taxes website created a medium for ordinary students to talk directly to their MPs and Senators on either side of the political divide,” said Mr Butterworth.
