Go8 ‘shop stewards in suits’

Mon 17 Aug 2009

The Australian Liberal Students’ Federation (ALSF) has today slammed the blatant partisanship of the Group of Eight (Go8).

The Go8 Chair, Alan Robson, issued a partisan media release today supporting the Labor Party’s $250 poll tax on students.

“The Go8 vice-chancellors have become union shop stewards in suits” said ALSF President, Alex Butterworth today.

Today, in another example of the “shop stewards in suits” attitude of the Go8 vice-chancellors, the ANU vice-chancellor, Ian Chubb, went as far as participating in a media stunt with Labor Youth Minister Kate Ellis.

“This is just another example of vice-chancellors caring more about the rights of administrators than the rights of students,” Mr Butterworth said.

“By supporting the Labor Party’s poll tax, Go8 vice-chancellors are supporting the Rudd Government’s anti-youth agenda.”

“The Go8’s support for a HECS style student tax means they support an increase in student debt, despite Kevin Rudd labelling the level of student debt in Australia a ‘national disgrace’,” Mr Butterworth said.
