YOUNG LABOR'S WAR ON SMOKO

Wed 22 Jul 2009

The ALSF has today re-affirmed its support for individual choice and freedom by condemning Young Labor's motion to ban smoking.

"The ALSF supports individual Australians' rights to make decisions for themselves, not have lifestyle choices dictated by Left-wing elites," ALSF President, Alex Butterworth said today.

Young Labor's proposed policy is yet another Left-wing attack on individual choice.

"This isn't just the nanny state telling people what they can and can not do. This is a bunch of aspiring Labor politicians and unionists who think they know what's better for you than you do," Mr Butterworth said.

By considering this motion, Young Labor have shown their complete distain for ordinary Australians and even their own support base. The motion is premised on a belief that Australians are incapable of making decisions for themselves about their own health and lifestyle. Left-wing self-appointed 'experts on healthy living' need to recognise the basic human right of individual choice.

"Like most Australians, I don't want to have healthy lifestyle advice dictated to me by union heavyweights, I want to make those decisions for myself," Mr Butterworth said. "I never thought I would see the day when an aspiring unionist wanted to ban smoko."

Young Labor have displayed the fundamental ideology and mentality of the Labor Party. Labor are the party of telling you how to live your life.

"The nanny state mentality is behind Kevin Rudd's paternalistic alco-pops tax, behind Stephen Conroy's draconian internet filter, and is the motivator behind Young Labor's proposed smoking ban," Mr Butterworth said, "from top to bottom, the Labor Party think they know better than everyone else and will use the coercive power of government to force their lifestyle choices on ordinary Australians".

The ALSF supports all Australians making decisions for themselves and not being dictated to by Left-wing elites.

"Before passing this policy, maybe the aspiring unionists in Young Labor should consider the reaction of their own base to losing their smoko break!" Mr Butterworth said.

"What's next, you can only smoke in your bedroom, under the covers, with all the lights turned out? 'It's the police, Mr. Leary! We know you're in there with the cigarettes. Come out with your hands up!'"
