About Us
What is the ALSF?The ALSF is the peak body for approximately thirty campus Liberal Clubs across Australia. Founded in 1948, the ALSF carries similar ideology to the Liberal Party of Australia. Whilst the Federation works closely with the Liberal Party, it is an independent organisation that pursues its own policy agenda. Many individual Liberal Clubs pre-date the existence of the Liberal Party itself. The Federation works to promote Liberal beliefs on campus, facilitates communication amongst individual clubs and assists in co-ordinating national Liberal Student campaigns. Liberal Students have a proud history of opposing the radical ideological actions of left-wing activists on campus. For thirty years, Liberal Students fought for the introduction of voluntary student unionism – the right for students to choose whether or not they join a student union. In 2005, decades of hard work came to fruition when the Higher Education Support Amendment (Abolition of Compulsory Up Front Student Union Fees) Bill was passed through the Federal Parliament. However, despite pre-election pledges to the contrary, the Rudd Labor Government has signalled it may again compel students to pay student union fees, regardless of whether they wish to join a student organisation.
